About me

I’m sure that you are wondering what makes ME think that YOU can manage to cook all of these recipes in a campervan.

Well, I’ll tell you.

I lived in a campervan. I lived in a campervan for 4 and a half years.

So when I use the term ‘gypsy’ I refer to the fact that I am both “inclined to a nomadic, unconventional way of life” and “a person who moves from place to place”.

My husband and I are on a bit of an adventure, I wont bore you with it here, you can read ALL about it over on 2people1life if you so wish, but this adventure has meant us living in a 27 year old camper and driving through over 60 countries; which in turn, has meant we have done a LOT of cooking in a campervan.

Life on the road is a joy and it’s a pain, it’s hard and it’s cheap, it’s an adventure and a journey and a life changer…all with “iddy biddy living space” (Quote – Genie from Aladdin)

Which is where the difficulty lies in preparing GOOD food on the move. There is little storage space, you don’t necessarily have a fridge and you don’t particularly want to spend your holiday/roadtrip cooking, washing up and food shopping. You’re used to cooking fabulous meals using every pot in the house, 4 hobs/ burners, an oven, a grill/broiler; possibly even a hotplate and you have all that wonderful crockery to serve it on. Now you are stuck with 2 hobs at a push and the potential for a BBQ (if the weather holds), and some very uninspiring ‘camp’ pots and pans…and then there is the consideration of eating off plastic plates, ugh, I can’t believe I have survived this long.

BUT, there is light at the end of the campervan tunnel, and, like everything in a camper or RV, it is very much within your reach.

I can help you push the boundaries of your campervan kitchen and cook great meals with minimum fuss and pot washing…or not, it depends what kind of mood you’re in. If you want a slow cooked pork braise, fine. Want a Steak with an incredible dressing, sure. Want to make a gourmet-fancy-pants-date-night dinner with candles and champagne, lets do this.

I am determined to displace the myth that your campervan kitchen is only equipped to cook reformed meats and canned beans.

me and my life

I promise that I will never tell you 100 ways to cook a hotdog, how to use a bloody dutch oven or about making sandwiches in paper bags over the fire pit (unless you ask for the paper bag trick, because, to be fair, its pretty cool)…I want you to eat good, nutritious, tasty food. Just because you are in a camper van doesn’t mean you have to eat badly.

You can eat great local, fresh food. You can eat tasty, reasonably priced, nutritious meals. You can eat better than you eat at home should you wish to, God only knows you are on holiday…you have time to ENJOY cooking for a change!

I have compiled a list of ever evolving hints and tips and can help you prepare ahead of time or just roll with it. I can help you turn those freshly caught scallops you bought from that guy in the lay-by this morning into a fab meal, I can show you what to do with parts of a vegetable you normally compost and I can show you that you can work wonders in a kitchen the size of a drop down, in-flight tray table.

I can show you that you CAN rock the camp kitchen on the road.

You CAN live like a gypsy, and eat like a king.

Disclaimer

Some of the images you will see WILL have been taken in a house, some even by professional photographers who have road-tested the recipe…but EVERY SINGLE RECIPE in this site has been cooked at least once in our campervan. In our van we have 2 gas burning hobs, a gas barbecue and a 3 cup blender. These are my weapons of mass feeding, choose yours wisely.

I can be held responsible for providing you with great recipes and hints and tips on how to make them in a small space, but I cannot be held responsible if you are a messy cook, or an inherently bad cook. I can only work one miracle at a time.

Lets cook!

I KNOW you will love cooking in Betty, so many treats to be had and hopefully this will help you believe you can cook pretty much anything you cook at home, CAN be cooked in your fab custom campervan kitchen. I’d love your feedback or inspiration for some gluten free recipes too! Maybe we can swap??
